The Detection of Buried Utilities using Electromagnetic Location course trains construction professionals to safely and accurately locate underground utilities before excavation, reducing the risk of service strikes.

This qualification will cover the following topics:

  • HSG47 requirements in accordance with using EML equipment
  • Safe working practices to include relevant or generic permits and specific client-based risk assessments, and method statements (RAMS)
  • EML Theory and limitations
  • Product inspections and pre work tests as recommended by the manufacturer
  • Equipment operation and application methods
  • Signal transmitter application techniques
  • Accessories and applications
  • Data logging properties and benefits

There are no formal entry requirements for this course. 

The course will be delivered in English. Delegates must be able to read, write and communicate verbally in English.

This course is suitable for construction and groundworks professionals including:

  • Operatives
  • Supervisors
  • Management and leadership

Delegates will need to complete the following:

  • Multiple choice question paper.
  • Practical test (set up, operate and locate underground services using the CAT and Genny).

Successful candidates will be awarded with a CITB certificate valid for 3 years.

Following successful completion of this course candidates will be able to:

  • Identify all potential risks to both themselves and others.
  • Read and fully understand any site plan.
  • Operate cable avoidance tools safely and effectively, in order to locate and/or avoid existing underground apparatus.
