NVQ Overview

Gaskell Safety offers ProQual NVQs designed for professionals in health and safety and construction. These NVQs provide practical, competency-based qualifications that validate your expertise to industry standards, are recognized across the industry and help you enhance your career.

  • Level 3 NVQs are ideal for those starting or advancing in supervisory roles, focusing on operational health and safety or construction management.
  • Level 6 NVQs are suited for experienced professionals aiming to take on senior responsibilities, offering in-depth knowledge and leadership skills.
  • Our Level 7 NVQ is tailored for those in strategic leadership roles, emphasizing advanced management and decision-making.

Portfolio Evidence

NVQs are competence-based. Each candidate is required to produce a portfolio of evidence which demonstrates their achievement of all of the learning outcomes and assessment criteria for each unit.

The qualification is internally assessed by the assessor allocated to the delegate. The assessor will use the evidence provided to measure a candidate’s skill, knowledge and understanding against the standards set in the qualification.

  • Record of oral and written questioning
  • Recognition of Prior Learning

Health & Safety NVQs

Content the delegate will cover includes:
  • Ensuring responsibility for actions to reduce risks to health and safety
  • Developing procedures to safely control work operations
  • Monitoring procedures to safely control work operations
  • Promoting a culture of health and safety in the workplace
  • Conducting a health and safety risk assessment of the workplace
  • Investigating and evaluating health and safety incidents and complaints in the workplace
  • Making sure actions in the workplace aim to protect the environment
  • Reviewing health and safety procedures in the workplace
  • Supervising the health, safety and welfare of a learner in the workplace

Content the delegate will cover includes:

  • Promoting a positive health and safety culture
  • Developing and implementing the health and safety policy
  • Developing and implementing effective communication systems
    for health and safety information
  • Developing and maintaining individual and organisational
    competence in health and safety matters
  • Identifying, assessing and controlling health and safety risks
  • Developing and implementing proactive monitoring systems for
    health and safety
  • Developing and implementing reactive monitoring systems for
    health and safety
  • Developing and implementing health and safety emergency
    response systems and procedures
  • Developing and implementing health and safety review systems
  • Maintaining knowledge of improvements to influence health
    and safety practice

Content the delegate will cover includes:

  • Risk-based safety systems management
  • Safety culture, sustainability and the global effect on
    performance
  • Digital technologies and incident investigation
  • Development as a strategic manager
  • Establish business risk management processes

Construction NVQs

Content the delegate will cover includes:

  • Confirming work activities and resources for an occupational work area
  • Co-ordinating and organising work operations
  • Implementing and maintaining health, safety and welfare
  • Developing and maintaining good occupational working relationships
  • Confirming the occupational method of work
  • Allocating and monitoring the use of Plant and Equipment
  • Confirming work meets quality standards
  • Implementing procedures to support the team’s performance
  • Co-ordinating and confirming dimensional control of requirement

This course is split into pathways. Each pathway is split into units.

Pathways that delegates can follow are:

  • Building and Civil Engineering
  • Highways and Maintenance Repair
  • Residential Development
  • Conservation
  • Demolition

Candidates must complete all of the Mandatory units, plus the Mandatory/Optional requirements from one of the Pathways above. More information about unit content can be found here.
